Wireless networks
In general it is well known that in a company environment the usage of wireless networks (WiFi, which by the way is short for wireless fidelity) has to be considered carefully. Basically wireless networks are unsafe, that’s just how it is.
Has it ever occurred to you that wireless networks in the direct vicinity of your company might also constitute a potential danger for you? You may have arranged everything very well:
- you monitor surfing on the Internet;
- certain websites have been blocked;
- and confidential information cannot get out of your network.
But have your neighbours also arranged everything so well? If they have a wireless network, which is insufficiently secured, or not at all, and the signal reaches your part of the building, this might cause problems for you.
Currently it is almost standard that each laptop contains a wireless network card. The software properly announces that a network is within reach and it is a piece of cake to make a connection. At that moment everyone can surf via the Internet connection of the neighbours and you have no idea how much time your employees are surfing on the Internet. In addition, in this way it is also simple to get round measures taken against leaking of confidential business information.
Such a scenario is not fiction. We have already encountered it in our practice.
