Securing the goods of ‘Het Goed’

Lasser
‘Het Goed’ is the name of a number of shops specialized in recycled goods in the cities of Almere, Weesp and Hilversum, located in the centre of the Netherlands. The shops belong to the Tomin Group, an enterprise that is active in the fields of industrial services, nurseries, construction, cleaning, posting, training of the work force and reintegration. Tomin Group employs about 1400 persons who are always ready to serve their customers.

It is attractive for clients to order different goods and services from the same organisation. Tomin Group offers them both high quality products and services in many fields. Each of the specialized companies of Tomin Group brings its products on the market independently. Obviously they do have access to the extensive knowledge and experience of the other Tomin Group companies.

Back to the approximately 6000 square meters of pots, pans, wickerwork, curiosities, glassware, cutlery, books, records, clothes, shoes, washing machines, refrigerators, furniture and other used household goods. These second-hand goods are offered for sale in well-organised shops after having been sorted, cleaned, refurbished, repaired and priced. Apart from this, the shops sell garden furniture and plants that are grown in the Tomin Group nurseries. Het Goed also organise special markets for Christmas and winter sports.

Like any other organisation Tomin Group is exposed to the same risks other companies are exposed to. Risks may emerge both from the inside and the outside. Therefore it is important to take preventive measures against shoplifting or fraud. This requires effective security management.

Security assessment
In order to find the ‘weak spots’ in security, the management of Tomin Group decided to call in Hoffmann Strategic Risk Management to carry out a security assessment. On the basis of this assessment we subsequently advise on what measures must be taken to control the risks and reduce losses. First we made an inventory of all risks. This inventory was the starting point for taking measures to control these risks. For several days we visited the second-hand shops to get a picture of the procedures and protocols, to inspect the premises and interview the management and employees.

The focus of the assessment was on the organisation of security, architectural and electronic security measures and the awareness of security among employees. It became clear that all these points required more attention.

Advice
Among other things we recommended setting up a security policy; drawing up a security plan; organising meetings about safety and security; improving access control and changing the cash register. Furthermore we recommended establishing procedures for the administration of keys, collecting service and staff purchase. With regard to architectural and electronic security measures we recommended improving the compartmentalisation of rooms; adjusting emergency exits; purchasing more safes and optimising the security system. Finally, we recommended training employees and stimulating security awareness among staff.

Security plan
The management of Tomin Group has already started effecting our recommendations. The following step in the process will be to make an inventory of the risks in other company branches. On the basis of the findings, a security plan will be drawn up for the overall organisation. In the end, all risks will be monitored and losses will be reduced to a minimum.
