It is not long before the Dutch will enjoy their traditional ‘oliebollen’ on New Year’s Eve and reflect upon the year that has past. Looking back on this year in advance, I remember 2002 as a year in which society has been confronted with a number of large-scale bookkeeping frauds and, closer by, the building fraud in the Netherlands...

And talking about events closer by: if you raise your glass with your loved ones the coming festive season there is a good chance that the content of it comes from one of your business relations. You may think: ‘So what! What’s wrong with that?’
Recently I spoke to professor Dr B.J.S. Hoetjes to ask him the same question. In this Update you can read his point of view on this matter.

I suggest you should consider something else the coming period: the generous giver! Make it clear to your suppliers that integrity is very important for you and that you do not wish to receive any gifts to keep the business relation as transparent as possible.

By approaching the subject of relational gifts differently you will distinguish yourself in a positive way. It may be a good starting point for changing the (business) world.
