Personal injury investigations and scene examinations
Hoffmann B.V. is often called in by third parties such as insurance companies, employers and lawyers to conduct personal injury and scene examinations. In investigations into personal injury, the aim is usually to determine whether somebody being financial compensated on the basis of an insurance policy is receiving that compensation lawfully. In practice, we regularly find that in addition to the compensation being paid the alleged victims also have other sources of income ─ not in itself an illegal act. However, it is another story when we find that that person has been earning money for activities for which he was deemed unfit and is also receiving insurance payments.
These investigations are often conducted by means of surveillance. The report is underpinned with photographs and can be used as evidence. In certain investigations, we confront the suspected perpetrator with our results. In the presence of the lawyer, binding agreements are then made with that person.
Scene examinations
These investigations are aimed at assessing material damage and not directly at finding a perpetrator ─ for example, a burglary investigation. We first look for clues and then look into how the burglary was perpetrated and how the burglar entered and left the building. Are there clues that show that the perpetrator was helped or received information from inside the company? Is the burglary aimed at inflicting damage through destruction, arson or sabotage? Or is it aimed at removing goods, information and/or money, and how specific were the burglars in searching the premises? The results of this investigation establish the insurance company’s obligation to pay damages and the liability of the victims.
We also conduct scene investigations if companies are being blackmailed ─ for example, sabotage of the company’s product by adding the wrong ingredients or life-threatening substances. The investigation then focuses especially on discontinuing the blackmail as quickly as possible by localising the contaminated product, tracking the logistic process and monitoring and scanning potential perpetrators. These investigations are usually tackled on a large scale with all the available resources and in cooperation with government when they involve life-threatening situations.
