One of our clients was confronted with an employee who suddenly resigned from his job. In itself, our client could live with that. Until it turned out that just before he left the company the employee had sent a large number of emails with sizeable attachments to his private email address. This fact was recorded in the mail server log, although the actual messages themselves had been deleted from the mailbox. However, during our digital investigation we were still able to find out which files the employee had mailed to himself. All the files contained confidential business information. Further investigation showed that the employee had set up a rival company and was intending to make very good use of the stolen information. We have also had to deal with cases where such information is sold to rival companies.

The information possessed by the journalist was extremely confidential, which was extremely awkward for our client. Using specialist investigation technologies, we launched an investigation on our client’s network. We discovered that emails of a very confidential nature were being regularly sent by one of the employees to an email account outside the organisation. Based on the information collected during this investigation, we were able to confront the relevant employee with his illegal activities.
