In the leading role: Arthur Legger
A couple of weeks ago I was asked to write something about myself as a new colleague for ‘In the leading role’. At the time I was on holidays and looking at the hearings of the parliamentary inquiry into the building fraud. To me it was an interesting accumulation of interpretations of integrity, ethics, and ‘realities’, ranging from a fake invoice that ‘isn’t fake because it says something after all’ to ‘no corruption or enrichment, but miscalculations’ and ‘I didn’t misinform the Lower House, because at the time I just forgot about it.’ It would be a good idea to download all the hearings, I thought, because they do not only offer excellent lesson material but also possibilities for a very strong sales pitch. The hearings made my holidays even more relaxing because they confirmed that I had done well in choosing Hoffmann Strategic Risk Management – the right company in the right market at the right moment.
In 1999, after years of research as a historian at the European University in Florence, I started working as a headhunter. After 11 September 2001, however, it became clear that prospects for the executive search did not promise much good for the future. This was not only due to the decrease in orders; the dominant hit and run mentality and bad performance of the sector also had it consequences. For example, the sanity check of the resume or the actual screening of the candidate was insufficient – unfortunately these procedures are often not taken serious enough. But I believe that employers should give most attention precisely to hiring reliable employees and doing business with reliable partners. The experience I have acquired from doing research and working in the executive search will be useful to contribute to the recruitment and selection of reliable employees.
On 1 October 2002 I started working for Hoffmann Strategic Risk Management, just when integrity and risks were hot issues that seemed to affect every sector of society. It is a real challenge for me – but also for the manager – to put the right man in the right place. I trust that I will get to know many readers better while exchanging ideas on the subject – without obligations of course.
