Databases and black lists
According to recent publications, the Advisory Council for the Dutch Retail Trade (Raad Nederlandse Detailhandel, RND) is talking to the Justice department to set up a national database registering the names of offenders who have repeatedly been involved in shop crime and on whom a ban on shopping has been imposed.
Several other retail organisations are also wondering how they can draw up a so-called ‘black list’. Recent inquiries show that trade and industry suffer 3 billion worth of damages as a result of crime. Enough is enough and people are sounding the alarm.
Prevention often starts at the door. How can I prevent letting in customers that a have shopping ban imposed on them? Which employee am I going to I hire? Where can I check whether this employee has not been involved in crime or theft at another retailer in the same branch or at one of his former employees? To put it briefly, a lot of branches would like to have a central registration point.
The (current) privacy legislation allows for this kind of registration. It is necessary to join forces to be able to establish an effective system of registration and data exchange. As an independent market leader in the Netherlands we would like to investigate if we can make a substantial contribution in establishing such a central system. Therefore I would like to invite everyone who is involved in this matter to contact us.
We must team up together in prevention!
