Update nr. 8

Bet on It …?!

I am on my way to the head office of a large multinational in Amsterdam, where I will give a presentation about security management. The spacious parking site in front of the entrance of the building is guarded. Barrier, intercom, camera, it looks impressive!

Before I get the chance to mention my name through the intercom, the barrier is already opened. Most hospitable indeed, but is that what is supposed to happen? When I enter the building with quite a lot of cases and boxes, I notice a turnstile and a lodge with two surveillance officers. I look, with bag and baggage, helplessly in the direction of the lodge. Fortunately, one of the officers understands me immediately and opens the gate near the turnstile. I nod very friendly to him and go through it.

During the presentation I relate the way in which I have entered the building and subsequently inquire after the costs of all these security measures. Judging from the uneasy fidgeting in the seats I presume these costs have been considerable. The effect? I have already demonstrated that.

After the presentation I put a bet: I will succeed in leaving the building in the same simple way as I came in. My contact stays near the elevator while I, charged with cases and empty boxes, once again throw a helpless look at the lodge. The turnstile is opened immediately: the security guard has recognized me. I shoot a triumphant look backwards, leaving my contact
standing there desperately.

Fortunately for my contact this despair does not last long, for when I want to drive out of the parking site, the barrier is not lifted until I say my name through the intercom. But yet …

I bet that you are going to check within your company how your employees deal with the technical equipment?
